A
s well as the regular maintenance our gardeners carry out (ie, weeding, mowing, pruning), these Case Studies are the results of additional projects completed

The site was an odd shape to work with as a number of different, disconnected features occupied each of the various corners. There was nothing much drawing each of these features together and the lawn was just the remaining ‘blob’ in the middle. In addition the bottom of the garden was a large expanse of bland gravel that had previously been hidden away by the shade of massive neighbouring conifers which have since been removed.

Garden Wonders Gardener, Gordon, wanted to apply a simple shape of lawn that would unify the whole garden together but because of the odd shapes involved, nothing like a straightforward circle, square or oblong would work and introducing a curvaceous lawn would just have added one more disconnected dimension. In the end, Gordon opted for three interconnected circles. With this, you can play around with the both the diameter and centre point of each circle to fit the space as required. One circle leads onto another and gives the necessary continuity down the length of the garden. Also it is possible to lead the eye from one side to the other by putting each adjoining circle on the opposite side of the garden as you look out from the back door. This increased the visual feeling of space even though the garden dimensions remain the same. Painting the timber fences, shed and trellis a natural dark green also has this effect. Planting then wraps around each circle of lawn, which has the dual effect of softening the formal shape and linking the whole thing together.

The client already had a large amount of gravel and obviously wanted to re-use this as much as possible so Gordon chose plants that look good against gravel i.e. colourful perennials and grasses. Also to extend the feeling of space he used many “see-through” plants such as Verbena bonariensis and more grasses. Using a limited pallet of plants increased the feeling of continuity and ensured that each plant really contributed to the whole scene as well as being beautiful in its own right.

Gordon says one of the greatest pleasures derived from planting this garden was that as a result, the client has become a huge fan of grasses such as Miscanthus sinensis and Stipa tennuisima.
